Halloween will be here next weekend, and the wind is blowing, the leaves are 'jumping' off the trees and the tourists are headed back home, many of whom will return over the Thanksgiving Holiday. How the seasons fly by!  The beauty of autumn in Northern Door County is so hard to beat!
Now it's time to begin settling in for the beginning of the months of winter and some 'comfort' food.  I have found a recipe in 'Midwest Living' magazine that I thought you may like; here it is, perfect for one of those days to cuddle in, read a book by the fireplace while you have a nice yummy beef stew simmering, waiting for everyone to come home to enjoy supper.

Autumn Beef Stew ('Midwest Living' Magazine..Sept/Oct 2015)
·         1/4 cup all-purpose flour
·         1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt
·         teaspoon cracked black pepper
·         pounds boneless beef chuck, trimmed of excess fat and cut into 1 1/2-inch chunks
·         strips bacon, cut crosswise into 1/4-inch strips
·         Canola oil
·         medium onions, cut into 1/2-inch wedges
·         cloves garlic, peeled and smashed
·         tablespoons tomato paste
·         cups reduced-sodium chicken broth
·         cups less-sodium beef broth
·         1 1/2 cups dry red wine
·         bay leaves
·         tablespoon snipped fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried thyme, crushed
·         teaspoon smoked paprika
·         pound potatoes, cut into 2-inch chunks
·         pound butternut squash; peeled, seeded and cut into 1 1/2-inch chunks
·         carrots, cut into 1-inch chunks
·         stalks celery, sliced into 1/2-inch thick
·         1/4 cup chopped fresh Italian parsley                                    Serves 8; Hands-on time: 45min;  Total time: 2hrs
Directions
In a large plastic bag, combine flour, salt and pepper. Add beef; shake to coat evenly. In a Dutch oven or large heavy pot, cook and stir bacon over medium-high heat until crisp. Transfer to paper towels with a slotted spoon. Add enough oil to bacon drippings to equal 2 tablespoons. Add half the beef to pot, shaking off any excess flour. Cook, stirring occasionally, until browned. Remove beef with a slotted spoon. Repeat with remaining beef.

"Forget-Me-Not, LLC" has something new just out....

Decorative Flour Sack Towels
Enjoy these decorative flour sack towels trimmed in beautiful fine quality 100% cotton.  They are perfect for everyday, the holidays or the different seasons.  The ruffle along the bottom is approximately 3 ½” long and has six (6) different fabric designs in it  Each towel has two (2) appliques above the ruffle, adding to its beauty and its unique character.  The towel is 18”x 33” plus the length of ruffle.
Flour sack towels are reminiscent of a time when flour was purchased in sacks weighing 50-100#.  When the flour sack was empty, it would be laundered, bleached, cut and hemmed.  They were used for many things around the house including kitchen towels.  Any nubs and imperfections are characteristic of the flour sack.
These towels are all a little different. We hope you enjoy your decorative flour sack.
